French pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie was in tears at the medal ceremony
after he was booed by the Brazilian audience for a second straight
night at the Rio Olympic Games.
Lavillenie was booed by the crowds during the competition with Brazil’s
Thiago Braz da Silva and also at the medal ceremony, where he got a
silver medal.
The International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach called the fans’ actions “shocking behavior” and said it is “unacceptable.” Da Silva, the Brazilian gold medalist, and IOC member Sergey Bubka later consoled the French athlete.
