Champions League winner and Eagles midfielder, John Mikel Obi, will on Friday launch his Pet Project ‘The Mikel Obi Foundation’.
The event will take place 6pm on Friday at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island,
Lagos, and will hold simultaneously with with a welcome party tagged ‘Welcome the Champion’ organised in Mikel’s honour by members of the Lagos Business Community led by Prince Donatus Okonkwo.
Lagos State governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola is expected to grace the occasion as a special guest.
Mikel, who won the 2012 UEFA champions league with Chelsea FC, says
the mission of his foundation is to bring succour to the homeless and
displaced people across the nation especially the ‘alamajiris’, adding
that the foundation would flag off in Jos.
“It was a dream for me when I was growing up. I know the way it
feels, many are homeless and have no food to eat and it has always been
in my mind to do something in this direction. I intend to make this a
lifetime thing if it achieves the purpose. I have been in talks with
other NGOS’ and have approached a number of corporate organisations and
they all have given their support to this project”, Mikel said.
Mikel joins the likes of Kanu Nwankwo, who set up ‘Kanu Heart
Foundation’ to help underprevileged Nigerian children suffering from
heart related problems.
