The heavy
rain two nights ago has caused a building in the early hours of yesterday
collapsed during the heavy rainfall, killing the landlord’s son.
The
building situated at No. 38/40, Shogbamu Street, Bariga, had one of its boys’
quarters collapsed killing a 21-year old, Olawale Hammed, whose building was
situated at 2 Community Street, closely behind the affected building.
READ MORE BELOW:
Olawale,
source at the scene of the incident said, was a son to the owner of the
building behind the collapsed one. The source said the deceased who was killed
at about 1a.m, and one other person identified as Bola Adesanya, were asleep
when the building collapsed and fell on their apartment. It was gathered that
the deceased died instantly.
A
survivor, a 35-year-old Adesanya Bola, an I.T. engineer, who was on the same
bed with the deceased, described his survival as miracle.
Bola said
he never knew that the deceased was dead not until about 5am, when his body was
pulled out of the rubble that covered both of them.
“All I
knew was that I saw that I was pressed down by heavy object and knew that water
had covered me, then I struggled to put away the object to get up. That was
about 1.05am. It was around 5am I learnt that Hammed is dead.” Bola said
Another
survivor, Mr. Durojaiye Oluwagbenga, who lives in the same building with the
deceased, said though he was at the church when his wife and sister called and
told him about the incident, said he had told them to call the deceased but was
informed that he (the deceased) did not respond to their calls and that it was
when he came back that it was learnt that the fellow was killed by the
collapsed building
Oluwagbenga
said his landlord had made several complaints about the collapsed building to
the Lagos State government and all agencies concerned but no action was taken,
not until when the building collapsed and killed the deceased.
He called
on the state government to ensure that the landlord of the building was
prosecuted.
Meanwhile,
the collapsed building and other two that are defective have been sealed off by
the officials of Lagos State Physical Planning and Development Authority,
LASPPDA, who were at the site of the colapsed building.
Mr.
Adekunle Rufai, who led the agency, said the incident happened due to the
sliding of embankment of the colapsed building. He confirmed that one person
was killed while another was injured.
Rufai
also said that the other buildings were sealed off because of the defective
conditions.
