Following the announcement of an incentive to the cleanest
neighbourhoods in Sokoto by the state government, residents trooped to
the streets on Saturday brandishing their brooms and using their shovels
and other sanitation equipment to keep their surroundings clean.
At the flag-off of the state’s special environmental sanitation exercise, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal announced that the top three cleanest neighbourhoods will get a reward of N1m, N750,000, and N500,000 respectively.
He also announced that for the next four Saturdays, the state will observe the special sanitation exercise, after which it will be held once every month.
The all-state environmental sanitation is the first of its kind ordered by Sokoto state government since the stoppage of the National Environmental Sanitation Days by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration in 1999.
