Under-23 Camp: Siasia Sends Players Home For Being Too Old

Emem Eduok (SENT HOME)

Some players seeking to be part of the Nigeria U23 male football team have been accused of being age cheats and sent away from the camp.

Currently, the team’s handlers are undertaking a screening process to raise a formidable team to compete at next year’s All African Games and then the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Led by Coach Samson Siasia, the U23 technical crew has decamped as much as 10 players suspected to be above the age required to be part of the Nigeria Dream VI team.

Amongst the big names allegedly involved in the ‘age deceit saga’ is Federation Cup Most Valuable Player and Top Scorer, Emem Eduok.

Eduok who went into the history books after scoring the first goal at the newly commissioned Akwa Ibom Stadium in Uyo is mysteriously credited with two different birth dates, both of which put him in the desired age bracket.

Internet information via this website stated that the Dolphins forward was born on January 21, 1994, while another website, revealed his international passport reads August 31, 1994.

Timi Ebikagboro, the media officer for the Nigeria U23 side, confirmed the dropping of Eduok even as he added that the team’s handlers will be on their toes not to allow any age cheats in the new squad being assembled.

“All selected players must come with their international passports when reporting to camp on the 4th of January,” he said. “Glo Nigeria Premier League players (are) to add license.”

The spokesperson also revealed that Coach Siasia has declared that only players born after January 1, 1993 will be eligible to report to camp, which has already witnessed over 1,000 interested players.
