Mad Man' Caught With Explosive Substances Trying To Bomb OAU

A person, who claimed to a mad man, was on Sunday caught with explosive substances around a hostel in Obafemi Awolowo University on Sunday.

The arrested person identified himself as Adedayo Rasaki Daniel. The young dark man was caught with explosives materials including Petrol, wires, stove, and newspapers at about 12noon by students of OAU.

A resident in Ile-Ife, Tope, confirmed that he knew Daniel to be a mentally ill person on the street, saying he was popularly called “Rasaki syco master”. The students alleged that Daniel could be responsible for a fire outbreak, suspected to be an explosion, which occurred in the institution on Wednesday.

They also said the composure of Daniel does not proof that he was not mentally okay. It was learnt that the alleged bomber was not a student of the institution but pretended to be one before he was caught.

It would be recalled that there was confusion over fire outbreak, suspected to be cause by explosion, at Block seven, room 107 of the hall on Wednesday. An eyewitness, identified as Baba T said, “A guy was caught trying to break into one of the rooms in Awo Annex. Explosive materials were found in his bag. He has been bartered and interrogated at Awo cafe where he confessed that he was sent and that he was behind the Wednesday arguable explosion. He has been taken to floor O(security investigative room) by the Awoites.”

Narrating how Daniel was caught, another eyewitness, Abbey said, “We are not much on campus, and few of us here are doing our project. So it makes it easier for us to identify a strange face. When we saw him, we were not convenient and in the spirit of OAU, we confronted him and asked him to identify himself. He could not do that and we decided to check his luggage.

“It was when we checked the things on him that we discovered that explosive materials were on him. We initially thought they were cooking materials until we searched further and found liquid materials that we could not ordinarily identify. We later called our final year science students to access the substances and they confirmed that they were part of the ingredients that could cause explosion.”

The students also suspected that Daniel wanted to “explode” the hall when they would have gone to view the final football match of the just concluded World Cup.
“That was how there was explosion on Wednesday when we went to watch world cup. He thinks he will be successful again. We are not fools here and we are security conscious. We know strange faces despite the large capacity of our school,” one of them said.

When contacted, The Chief Security Officer of OAU, Mr. Paul Ogidi confirmed that a person was arrested and taken to the Police Station. Also, the Public Relations Officer of the School, Mr. Biodun Olarewaju told our correspondent on the telephone that necessary steps have been taken to confirm if the arrested person was mad or not.

He said, “What happened was that our security unit apprehended somebody, whose move was suspected not to be wrong. While they searched him, a stove, old newspapers copies, and some liquid mixture suspected to be kerosene, petrol or so was found on him.

“From our observation, the young guy may not be ok. We don’t want to live anything to chances because of the security challenges in the country and that is why we handed him over to the Police. We want the police to use their expertise to check if the guy is mentally ok or not. I wish to put on record that our security officers are ever vigilant, and we don’t want havoc here, machinery has been put in motion to safeguard lives and property.”

It would be recalled that some students of OAU had during their congress before the shutdown of the school threatened to join militancy, kidnapping and terrorism if there fee was not reversed.
