Some executive members of the employees' union and officials of the
Nigerian Labour Congress today shot the head office of the Union Homes
Plc at Lagos in protest against inept management that they claim is
running down the company. Union Homes Plc, a subsidiary of Union Bank
Plc had begun sudden termination of employment contracts since last year
over the claim that the management is falling short of financial
capacity to retain its staff.
The current management team, protesting staff say, is responsible for
the steeping fortune of the Union Homes. The protesters, who took the
entrance of the Union Homes Plc in Lagos this morning were armed with
souvenirs and aprons bearing labels of the Nigerian Labour Congress. A
member of the workers union at the protest told our correspondent that
the employees had engaged the management in series dialogues that all
came to futile end. " They continued issuing termination letters without
pay ," said one of the protesters. In the last five months only, the
Union Homes Plc is said to have retrenched more than three hundred
employees, some with meager send-off payment and others with no pay. "
We tried hard to manage it internally but that also did not yield, and
it appears it soon would be our turn; that's why we just must come out
to protest the ugly development " , one of them said.
The workers complained that titling the letters of employees'
disengagement as " Employment Termination " was another worrisome aspect
of the crisis. It is what we are facing ," a member of the union said.
A flier shared by the protesters captioned " Save Our Souls in Union
Homes PLC Before We Die " highlights some of the protesters' demand. The
workers asked for immediate payment of 'Legacy Fund' to their
individual staff account. The fund, protesters alleged, had been
tampered with by management of of the Union Homes Plc. "
