A twenty-five-year old man, simply identified as Osondu Boobu, was
on Sunday night, killed by gunmen suspected to be cultists along the
Famous Bus Stop in Pedro area of Bariga
The deceased was said to have, around 8:00 p.m, left his 30, Ayinke
Street home, where he resided with his parents, to have fun at the
popular Famous Hotel, when the incident happened.
Crime and Security gathered that the deceased Ozondu, was still in
the hotel bar, when a gang of about six people, suspected to be members
of Eiye Confraternity, accosted him and demanded for money from him,
which he reportedly declined.
The cultists were reportedly making merry with two policemen, simply
identified as one Corporal Sanni, who was formerly attached to Pedro
Police station and is now with the Special Anti Robbery Squad and
another policeman before the attack on
Ozondu.
One of the gunmen also reportedly accused him of being a member of a
rival cult group in the area, ‘Aiye’, and that he had earlier seen him
fraternizing with members of the rival cult at Lady Lak area of the
state
“One of the cult members accused Osondu of not just being an Aiye
member but also that he was being sponsored by them to gather
information on the activities of Eiye members in Somolu and Bariga”, a
resident, who pleaded anonymity told Crime and Security.
It was gathered that one of the cultists prompted the attack on the
deceased, when he dashed to a nearby table and grabbed a bottle, which
he smashed and stabbed the neck and upper chest of the deceased who ran
out of the hotel premises and rushed into a passing tricycle and was
taken to Lady Lak Hospital. On getting to the hospital, he was rejected
and referred to Somolu General Hospital.
It was gathered that on the way to Somolu General Hospital, one of
the two policemen, who was reportedly present during the incident,
stopped the tricycle operator and ordered him to drop the bleeding
Osondu from his tricycle. “He commanded the unnamed tricycle operator to
go and call the deceased man’s mother before he could be allowed to go
to the hospital”, a source said.
The twenty five year old man, however, died before his mother or any
of his family members could arrive at Famous Bus Stop, where the
policeman allegedly stopped the motorcyclist from taking him to the
hospital.
A resident of the area, who pleaded anonymity, while speaking with
Crime and Security, said that, “for sometime now, Famous Hotel, like the
Arena Club at Jibowu, has become the den of cult members. The police
should do something about it because our lives are in danger”.
