A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) servicing in Ondo
State, Tosin Olaniyan, was on Thursday crushed by a reckless driver in
Akure, the state capital.
The corps member was hit by the driver in front of the Akure South
Local Government headquarters, venue of his weekly Community Development
Service (CDS).
The deceased, a batch ‘B’ corps member with call up number
0D/11c/0301 was having his primary assignment at Goodnews Grammar
School, Fadeyi Street, Osinle, Akure when the incident occured.
Members of Batch ‘B’ corps members currently serving in Akure wept
uncontrollably when they learnt of the death of their colleague.
The driver of the car, simply
identified as Mr. Olaoluwa Fasemo, a staff of Coop Cocoa Industry in
Akure was on top speed when the deceased was crossing the road around
9:00 am.
It was further gathered that the corps members, many of who were
already in the premises of the local government secretariat rushed to
the scene of the incident following the noise of passersby.
On getting to the scene, they saw one of their own in the middle of the road lying helplessly in a pool of his blood.
Olaniyan was later rushed to the State Specialist Hospital, Akure
where he was referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where he
eventually died.
The Public Relations Officer of the NYSC in the state, Mrs. Christy
Olatoye, described the death of Olaniyan as a shock to the commission.
She said the NYSC in the state had informed the family of the
deceased, while the NYSC in the state will play its part in his burial.
The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Mr.
Adeniran Aremu, confirmed the incident and explained that the driver had
been arrested while his vehicle had also been impounded.
The police spokesperson said investigation into the matter had started and that the suspect will soon be charged to court.
